VIRUS TRACKER — Nov. 17: 53 New COVID-19 Cases

Fifty-three new COVID-19 cases were reported statewide on Tuesday, including 37 on Oahu, six on the Big Island and two on Maui. Eight cases were among Hawaii residents diagnosed out-of-state.

Gov. David Ige issued a new statewide mask mandate on Monday, clarifying rules that were previously set by individual counties. The requires everyone in the state to wear a mask in public but outlines exemptions for people with medical conditions and children younger than 5 years old.

There have been 1,440 new cases reported statewide in the last two weeks. Health officials use the number of cases reported in the past 14 days as a rough approximation of the number of active cases, or people who could still be infectious.

The COVID-19 case reports are based on test results from laboratories statewide. The numbers include lab results from both residents and tourists. Since March, 95% of cases diagnosed in the islands have been among residents.

Civil Beat calculates at least 240 people have died from the disease in Hawaii including 18 deaths on Hawaii island that have not been recorded yet by the Department of Health due to medical verification lags. The statewide official death toll remains 222. County officials are usually the first to announce local cases and fatalities.

The largest cluster of cases recorded in Hawaii to date is associated with the Oahu Community Correctional Center, where testing is ongoing.

The Hawaii Joint Information Center reported one of 30 staff members tested positive and another 160 diagnostic tests of OCCC inmates conducted over the weekend were negative. Overall, the facility has has seen a 99% recovery rate among inmates.
