VIRUS TRACKER — Nov. 16: 95 New COVID-19 Cases

Most of the new cases were diagnosed on Oahu.

Ninety-five new COVID-19 cases were reported statewide on Monday, including 76 on Oahu, eight on the Big Island, seven on Maui and two on Kauai. Two cases were residents diagnosed out-of-state.

The new cases reported represent diagnoses confirmed on both Sunday and Monday. The state did not provide a case report on Sunday due to a website upgrade.

The COVID-19 case reports are based on test results from laboratories statewide. The numbers include lab results from both residents and tourists. Since March, 95% of cases diagnosed in the islands have been among residents.

Civil Beat’s virus tracker is updated when the state releases its daily numbers. The state has now resumed posting the numbers at noon.

Hawaii County Civil Defense reported one new fatality Monday, taking the island’s death toll to 49.

Civil Beat calculates at least 240 people have died from the disease in Hawaii including 18 deaths on Hawaii island that have not been recorded yet by the Department of Health due to medical verification lags. The statewide official death toll remains 222.

There have been 1,466 new cases reported statewide in the last two weeks. Health officials use the number of cases reported in the past 14 days as a rough approximation of the number of active cases, or people who could still be infectious.

The health department is now providing weekly reports about situations where the virus has spread to multiple people. The largest cluster of cases recorded in Hawaii to date is associated with the Oahu Community Correctional Center.

More than half of all diagnosed cases to date in Hawaii have been among people under 40 years old. But people over the age of 40 make up roughly 84% of all hospitalizations. So far, with the virus.
