Hawaii island identified 43 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, the island’s biggest single-day increase since the pandemic began. The previous record was 39 cases on Aug. 28.

Statewide, health officials reported 133 new cases, including three in Maui County and 87 on Oahu. The health department also reported 11 virus-related deaths on Oahu, but eight were people who had died between Aug. 15 and Sept. 15 and whose deaths had not been included in official tallies because of paperwork delays.

The state is slated to launch a pre-travel test program on Oct. 15 to restart tourism, but Kauai and Maui County mayors are calling for the program to be modified so that travelers have to take a second test after arriving in Hawaii.

Oahu’s framework for reopening is based on two metrics: the average number of daily cases and the average number of tests that return positive each week — a figure referred to as the positivity rate.
