VIRUS TRACKER — Oct. 25: 121 New COVID-19 Cases In Hawaii

Hawaii health officials reported 121 statewide Sunday with 49 on Oahu, 51 on Hawaii island and 18 in Maui County, where there is an outbreak on Lanai. There were also two new cases of residents diagnosed outside Hawaii.

Kauai County officials reported Sunday that a resident tested positive for COVID-19 after voluntarily taking a free post-travel test from the county at least three days after trans-Pacific travel.

There were no new deaths reported, keeping the official death toll at 212. Civil Beat calculates at least 224 people have died from the disease in Hawaii, which includes confirmed deaths that have not been recorded yet by the Department of Health.

Lanai has seen dozens of new COVID-19 cases this week, including workers at the Four Seasons Resort at Manele Bay and at least 15 students at Lanai High and Elementary School. Lanai island, home to fewer than 3,000 people, is part of Maui County.

Maui Mayor Mike Victorino has asked Gov. David Ige to approve a stay-at-home order for the island that would take effect 12:01 a.m. Tuesday. State officials have asked residents there to shelter in place to slow the spread.

Lanai has limited medical resources and patients needing intensive hospital care for coronavirus complications would likely be flown to Maui. Almost 20 of the cases reported on Lanai have not been verified by state officials and added to the state’s tally.

There are currently 75 people , including 18 people in intensive care — 21 patients fewer than were reported Tuesday.

Decreasing levels of infections and hospitalizations on Oahu moved the county to Thursday, which loosened some restrictions on restaurants and gyms.

Of 14,672 cases of COVID-19 identified in Hawaii, 7% have required hospitalization and 95% were residents.
