VIRUS TRACKER — Aug. 28: 265 New COVID-19 Cases In Hawaii And 4 Deaths
There are more than 5,400 active cases in the islands, based on isolation release figures provided by the Department of Health.
Hawaii health officials reported three COVID-19 related deaths on Oahu and one death on Maui Friday, along with 265 new cases across the islands.
Two men and two women — all 70 years old or older — have died. The state’s COVID-19 death toll now stands at 59.
There were 233 new coronavirus infections on Oahu, 26 on Hawaii island, and six on Maui tallied on Friday.
An average of about 250 new COVID-19 cases have been verified daily during the last week, with the bulk of them on Oahu, where a federal testing campaign is underway. Ìý±Ê±ð´Ç±è±ô±ð various locations during the next two weeks, but don’t need an appointment to get tested.
State officials said earlier this week that some of the cases identified recently have been associated with a funeral, beach party, and hospital.
Tracy Dallarda, Maui Memorial Medical Center spokeswoman, said Friday that the hospital is currently caring for 31 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, some of whom were admitted from the community. Another 38 MMMC health care workers have tested positive and are in quarantine.
Maui’s Hale Makua Health Services is caring for one COVID-19 positive elderly resident — who doesn’t have symptoms — in isolation in Kahului facility. The two cases found there this month prompted Hale Makua to test 23 residents and 61 staff, all of whom had tests that returned negative, according to CEO Wesley Lo.
The uncontrolled community spread of the disease on Oahu prompted the island’s latest two-week stay-at-home order, which went into effect at 12:01 a.m. Thursday and triggered closures of businesses including hair salons and gyms. Child care, construction, health care and some educational and religious services will be allowed to remain open.
Women in Hawaii’s workforce have been disproportionately affected by the economic fallout of the pandemic, with more women filing for unemployment, data show.
City grants to people on Oahu who need help with rent, utility payments and child care have been slow to be awarded. Cumbersome applications and red tape are blamed for less than 10% of the fund being distributed so far.
On Friday, the Hawaii Department of Education reported 20 new coronavirus cases on schools campuses in the past week, nearly doubling what had been the cumulative number as of June 26 to 49 total cases. The department is updating the number of school-affiliated positive cases on a weekly basis, but only by complex area. No schools are named. The current active case count recorded by DOE is currently 49.
