VIRUS TRACKER — Aug. 25: 215 New Cases In Hawaii
Approximately 270 coronavirus patients are hospitalized statewide as of Tuesday, more than twice the number of patients hospitalized during the first week of August.
Hawaii health officials reported 215 new COVID-19 cases in Hawaii on Tuesday, including 201 on Oahu, 11 on Hawaii island and three on Maui.
Since the outbreak began in March, there have been 6,382 COVID-19 diagnoses made on Oahu, 303 in Maui County, 220 on Hawaii island and 56 on Kauai, along with 23 other Hawaii residents diagnosed out of state.
Lt. Gov. Josh Green said Tuesday the state has about 4,700 people with active COVID-19 infections who are being monitored by the state health department, 95% of whom are on Oahu.
Oahu Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced a new stay-at-home order that goes into effect 12:01 am Thursday and will last for two weeks. Businesses including hair salons and gyms must close, and restaurants will have to revert to takeout only. Child care, construction, health care and some educational services and religious services will be allowed to remain open.
During the shutdown, Oahu’s city officials are embarking on a new surge testing program funded by the federal government. The goal is to conduct as many as 70,000 tests during the next two weeks. The City and County of Honolulu is covering the cost of 130 hotel rooms that will be offered to people who need quarantine space.
Green called surge testing capabilities offered by the federal government a “blessing.” As many as 5,000 tests a day will be available no charge for first responders and the public at large. That’s about double the number of tests currently conducted in the islands daily.
D show that COVID-19 has affected more adults younger than 50 years old to date than elderly patients, but more fatalities have occurred among the elderly population.
Despite experts questioning of the scientific rationale for beach and park closures, those closures will remain in effect, Caldwell said.
