State health officials reported another COVID-19 related death on Oahu and 134 new COVID-19 cases in the state on Tuesday.

New infections documented by the included seven on Maui and three on Hawaii island, with the remaining 124 cases on Oahu. One of the three people newly infected on Hawaii Island had traveled to Oahu.

There have been 41 deaths related to COVID-19 in the state to date, including 34 on Oahu and six on Maui. One Hawaii resident has died out of state.

Recent Oahu COVID-19 Clusters

There are more than 3,400 active cases in the state, a number that Lt. Gov. Josh Green says is worrisome.

“This concerns me because if about 11% of all people with COVID-19 are hospitalized, we’re pending about 343 hospitalizations,” he said in a .

Hawaii has seen an average of about 229 new cases confirmed daily during the past week, and state officials have recorded more cases so far in August than all prior months combined.

State health officials say many of the latest infections are associated with among friends and families in private homes. Some cases have involved residents who traveled or hosted out-of-state visitors in their home.

Most of the cases have been among adults. On Monday and Tuesday, 21 children were confirmed to have COVID-19 by the health department. Kids are usually “contacts of adult cases, indicating the virus is spreading within households,” according to a state coronavirus spokesperson.

Nearly all 134 infections confirmed Tuesday were caught in the community, but seven cases had a known travel-related association. People are catching COVID-19 in a variety of ways, health officials said. For the first time, the department has offered more information about recent clusters. Infections have been tied to gyms, a homeless shelter, several restaurants, an automotive cleaning and detailing service, three fire stations, and bars. Oahu Community Correctional Center is dealing with 287 cases. A funeral gathering led to 75 confirmed cases.

On Maui, various clusters have emerged, such as one associated with a construction site and a party on Oahu attended by five Maui residents.

Maui Memorial Medical Center is dealing with . The facility had dozens of cases in a separate outbreak in March.

About 6.3% of all tests administered during the last seven days have returned positive for COVID-19, a moving average that has been on the rise in recent days,
