VIRUS TRACKER — Aug. 17: 174 New COVID-19 Cases
Multiple hospital workers at Queen’s hospital Punchbowl are isolating after testing positive for COVID-19.
State health officials reported 174 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, including nine on Maui and two on Hawaii island. The rest were on Oahu.
About 6.3% of all tests administered during the last seven days have returned positive for COVID-19, a moving average that has been on the rise in recent days,
Communications officials with The Queen’s Health Systems said nine employees who work at The Queen’s Medical Center Punchbowl have tested positive for COVID-19. Some of them work directly with COVID-19 patients. Hospital officials said they are contacting anyone potentially exposed or at risk to ensure they are tested for the disease.
“At this time, there does not appear to be any impact to our patients, and all units remain operational,” Queen’s officials stated in a press release on Sunday.
The state’s largest jail continues to deal with a COVID-19 outbreak, where efforts to stop the spread of the disease have led to more cramped conditions and aggravation among inmates.
The state may need to push back its planned Sept. 1 date for reopening the state to tourists with a modified quarantine, Gov. David Ige said last week.
Hawaii has seen an average of 226 new daily cases over the last seven days, and recorded more cases so far in August than all prior months combined.
On Monday, the Wahiawa Community Health Center reported a medical assistant tested positive for the virus and has been in quarantine since Wednesday.
The Hawaii Department of Public Safety also reported new cases at the Oahu Community Correctional center, bringing the number of inmates who have tested positive there to 181. Thirty staff have also tested positive at OCCC.
The pandemic has disproportionately impacted non-Hawaiian Pacific Islanders. Data show nearly a third of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Hawaii have afflicted Marshallese, Samoans, Tongans, Chuukese and other Indigenous peoples of the Pacific.
