Hawaii now has seen 2,197 positive cases of coronavirus since state health officials began reporting testing results in March.

That’s up 87 cases since Friday, a marked drop in the number of new cases being reported over the past several days.

All the new cases were on Oahu, state statistics show. One case was removed from Maui’s total due to updated information.

But state Department of Health officials said in a news release on Saturday that test results are now delayed again due to a lag in mainland processing where many of Hawaii’s tests are now being sent. So results are taking five to seven days to come back, they said.

“This delay may make case numbers appear lower than actual disease activity,” the press release said.

“Many of the cases reported recently are associated with social gatherings,” said Health Director Bruce Anderson said in the release.

According to the news release, this month, multiple cases have been associated with a yoga class, fire station, funeral events, gyms, socializing at bars and training events. Infections have been traced to workplaces including a construction company and site, non-patient care areas of hospitals, social service organizations, nursing and care homes, retail establishments and warehouse and delivery businesses.

Health officials said new cases on Oahu are located all over the island including Haleiwa, Hauula, Kaneohe, Laie, Mililani, Wahiawa, Waimanalo, Aiea, Ewa Beach, Honolulu proper, Kailua, Kapolei, Pearl City, Waianae and Waipahu.

DOH does not release more details on cases or investigations, saying the state needs to protect the privacy of the people involved. However, the lack of data made public in Hawaii has drawn widespread criticism from public health professionals and others who say the public needs much more and better information in order to make better decisions.
