State health officials reported 118 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, including four on Maui and two on Hawaii island. The rest of the cases were on Oahu, where there are now close to 2,000 active cases.

Hours after the daily case update, the health department said in a release that two elderly Oahu men had died. Their deaths will be recorded in the health department’s data release on Wednesday, but bring the state’s death toll to 36.

An interisland travel quarantine went into effect Tuesday. The order doesn’t apply to people traveling to Oahu from neighbor islands.

Workers at the Oahu Community Correctional Center told Civil Beat they are becoming increasingly alarmed about a growing number of cases at Hawaii’s largest jail.

Reports show that as of Monday, 54 OCCC inmates have been tested, six tested positive, and two inmate tests are pending. The jail held 837 male inmates and 101 females as of Aug. 3.

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard is calling on Gov. David Ige to remove state Health Director Bruce Anderson and epidemiologist Sarah Park, as new concerns about the state’s contact tracing abilities come to light.

The union representing contact tracers filed a grievance with the health department on Friday saying that health officials have lied to the public about how many tracers are actually on the job, .

Anderson and Park have repeatedly insisted that the state has enough contact tracers to handle the current caseload, and that the health department will be able to hire more tracers as needed. The complaint says contact tracers are overloaded, are working long hours without overtime, and are being asked to do medical swabs in the field without the training or protection they need.

Meanwhile, New York  on Tuesday, and people traveling from Hawaii to New York will now have to isolate themselves for two weeks.
