VIRUS TRACKER — Aug. 29: 310 New COVID-19 Cases And 3 Deaths In Hawaii
More than 8,000 people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in Hawaii since the pandemic began.
Health officials reported the deaths of three people on Oahu on Saturday, along with 310 new COVID-19 cases — the second-highest number of cases on a single day to date.
The bulk of the cases — 263 — were on Oahu. Officials also diagnosed 39 people with COVID-19 on Hawaii island, seven on Maui and one person on Kauai.
So far 62 people in Hawaii have died from the disease.
The state released results for 3,025 new tests Saturday, making the daily positivity rate 10.2%, Lt. Gov. Josh Green posted on his Instagram page.
Federal officials have said the positivity rate should be below 5% and have teamed with state and county officials to ramp up testing and contact tracing efforts in Hawaii.
To that end, officials are closing down H-3 Freeway on Tuesday and Thursday to facilitate mass testing for COVID-19. Traffic will be closed in both directions from 7:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. on both days and testing stations will be set up inside the Harano Tunnel,
Thousands of Oahu residents have been showing up to get free tests as part of the federally funded testing surge aimed at slowing the spread of the virus on the island.
Uncontrolled community spread of the disease on Oahu prompted the island’s latest two-week stay-at-home order, which went into effect at 12:01 a.m. Thursday and triggered closures of businesses including hair salons and gyms. Child care, construction, health care and some educational and religious services will be allowed to remain open.
On Friday, the Hawaii Department of Education reported 20 new coronavirus cases on school campuses in the past week. The department is updating the number of school-affiliated cases on a weekly basis, but only by complex area. No schools are named.
