Forty-seven new COVID-19 cases were confirmed by state officials with the Hawaii Department of Health Tuesday.

All cases were on Oahu except for one new infection on Maui. One case was removed from Hawaii island as a result of updated information,

Six of Tuesday’s new cases were children under the age of 18. Eight infections have been confirmed to have been contracted in the community and two are associated with travel. The remaining 37 cases are still under investigation, according to the Hawaii COVID-19 Joint Information Center.

Approximately 54 people are currently hospitalized in the state, Lt. Gov. Josh Green said Tuesday.

Some Oahu hospitals are responding to a troubling surge in patients, he told Civil Beat. More than two dozen people were recently hospitalized at Queen’s Medical Center at Punchbowl, six of whom needed ventilation, he said. Social gatherings such as parties and funerals could have contributed to clusters of infection, he said.

Green said the average hospital stay is 10.5 days.

“You could see how the hospitals could get backed up real fast,” Green said, pointing out that the state has seen nearly 900 cases in the last 30 days — almost all of them on Oahu. About 10% of people confirmed to have the virus in Hawaii have needed hospital care.

Since the start of the pandemic, 1,757 people in Hawaii have tested positive for the virus, 1,205 of whom have been released from isolation.
