University Of Hawaii Proposes Tuition Reduction, Freeze
The proposal would reverse previously approved tuition increases.
(AP) — University of Hawaii officials have proposed reducing tuition for the next school and freezing it through the 2022-23 school year.
University President David Lassner says the proposal would provide most students with a flat tuition rate for five consecutive years, including the current school year.
The proposal would reverse previously approved tuition increases. Resident tuition was set to go up by 2 percent at the Manoa campus this year while other campuses would have seen a 1 percent increase.
The university says the tuition changes stem from efforts to increase affordability, improve price competitiveness and reverse enrollment declines.
Lassner says the cost of the tuition proposal would likely be offset by enrollment increases.
The board of regents will consider the tuition changes at its meeting Thursday.
