Anna Akaka, one of Sen. Daniel Akaka’s daughters-in-law, rests lei on a mural behind the casket. The body of the senator, who died April 6 at age 93, lay in state in the rotunda of the Hawaii State Capitol for 24 hours beginning 10 a.m. Friday.

The Hawaii Army National Guard escorts the senator’s flag-draped coffin onto the Rotunda. Akaka served as a civilian worker in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1943 to 1945, and served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947.

Former Hawaii Gov. George Ariyoshi was one of several VIP speakers. Others included former Govs. John Waihee, Ben Cayetano and Neil Abercrombie, and Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell.

Saturday’s “Celebration of Life” service at Kawaihao Church was open to the public, as were the services on Friday at the Capitol.

Saturday’s celebration included son Danny Akaka Jr. offering reflections of the senator’s five children. Grandson Dr. David Mattson speaks on behalf of the senator’s 15 grandchildren.

The Akaka family bids an intimate final aloha to their beloved patriarch. A private burial for the family will take place at the National Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl on Monday.
