The record rainfall that dumped more than 28 inches of rain in 24 hours on Kauai, triggering floods and landslides, has dramatically altered the landscape around Hanalei and much of the North Shore.

As businesses, homeowners and construction crews continued their cleanup efforts, Google had been waiting for a clear day to capture images of the areas affected. It finally got one on Wednesday, April 18.

These are the first images captured by Google’s GeoEye-1 satellite since the flooding during the weekend of April 14-15.

After record rainfall fell on the north shore of Kauai, much of the sand was pushed out to Hanalei Bay forming a sandbar underneath Hanalei Pier.

A closer look at Hanalei Bay shows how flash flooding took out a large chunk of Weke Road and knocked homes from their foundations along the shoreline.

More than 28 inches of rain fell over a 24-hour period, causing the Hanalei Stream to fill much of the valley and inundating taro farms and a wildlife preserve.

The rainstorm transformed the beaches at Lumahai and Wainiha beach parks.
