Democrats and Republicans of聽former FBI Director Robert Mueller on Wednesday to lead the investigation into Donald Trump campaign鈥檚 ties to Russia.

That includes members of Hawaii’s congressional delegation, who issued statements and tweeted their reaction.

“The appointment of a special counsel is a victory for the American people who have demanded the truth about Russia鈥檚 goal to undermine our democracy and the Trump team鈥檚 ties to these efforts,” said U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono, who is recovering from surgery related to her recent diagnosis of kidney cancer.

She continued: “As someone who has been calling for a special counsel for months now, I applaud the selection of former FBI Director Robert Mueller who has a reputation for independence and a dogged pursuit of the truth. I hope that Director Mueller鈥檚 investigation will be truly independent and free to follow the facts wherever they lead. The American people deserve no less.鈥

Here’s what U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa had to say:

“Although I believe the Trump administration took too long to appoint an independent investigator, I am pleased the Department of Justice has now appointed special counsel and I have confidence that former FBI Director Robert Mueller, who served in both the Bush and Obama administrations, will act independently on behalf of all Americans, discern the facts and discover the truth regarding Russian interference in our U.S. election.

“I would also hope Mueller’s investigation will include fact gathering regarding the President’s firing of FBI Director Comey and the President’s alleged attempt to intervene in the FBI’s investigation of Michael Flynn.”

Following the appointment, the White House issued a statement from the president: “As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know 鈥 there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity.”

The president added, “I look forward to this matter concluding quickly. In the meantime, I will never stop fighting for the people and the issues that matter most to the future of our country.”

Trump is a Republican while Hawaii’s delegation is all-Democratic.
