A plastic foam shirt accessory was one of the looks on display during Friday’s “Trashion Show,” organized by Ocean Friendly Restaurants Hawaii, the Surfrider Foundation Oahu Chapter, the Sierra Club Oahu Group, Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii and the Kokua Hawaii Foundation.

Final wardrobe adjustments were made at Magic Island before protesters headed by bus toward the Longs Drugs on Pali Highway.

The demonstrators called for a tougher plastic bag ban in Honolulu — a proposal the City Council just postponed — and a statewide ban on plastic foam food containers, which is under consideration at the Legislature.

The protesters marched up Bishop Street on their approach to Longs Drugs, one of the companies that now uses thicker plastic bags that are exempt from the current Oahu ban.

Jodi Malinoski led the marchers through the Fort Street Mall. A state Senate bill would ban plastic foam food containers in all counties that lack a polystyrene foam container recycling program.

The protesters targeted Longs, Wal-Mart and Nico’s Pier 38 restaurant.

In addition to wearing the products they want banned, protesters expressed their sentiments in signs outside Longs.
