Nurse Aide Slaps Dementia Patient
Judge bans the nurse from caring for patients for 30 days.
Hawaii Attorney General Doug Chin is not tolerating the “egregious” type of behavior that a young nurse’s aide recently exhibited by slapping a 93-year-old dementia patient under his care.
Courtney Young, 36, was ordered to pay the maximum $2,000 fine this week after being charged with the misdemeanor offense of endangering the welfare of an incompetent person.
鈥淭his case involved the abuse of someone who was incredibly vulnerable,” Chin said in a statement Wednesday. “This type of egregious behavior will be prosecuted swiftly by my office鈥檚 Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.鈥
He could have faced a year in prison but Honolulu district court Judge Naunanikinau Kamalii opted to defer time behind bars.
The had asked the court to ban Young from caring for patients for a year but the judge decided to order a 30-day ban instead.
Young works at Beckwith Hillside Care Home, a state-licensed adult day care facility in Manoa that’s owned by his mother.
Another certified nurse鈥檚 aide saw Young slap the victim at the care home and immediately went over to assist the victim, who suffers from dementia and is wheelchair bound, according to the attorney general’s office.
The case was filed Dec. 16. Young pleaded no contest Wednesday.
