On theÌýeve of the 75th commemoration of Imperial Japan’s “dastardly”Ìýattack, Oahu-born Barack Obama has issued a proclamation honoringÌýNationalÌýPearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
“In memory of all who lost their lives on December 7,Ìý1941 — and those who responded by leaving their homes for theÌýbattlefields — we must ensure the sacrifices they made in theÌýname of liberty and democracy were not made in vain,” the president said Tuesday.
He continued:Ìý“On thisÌýsolemn anniversary, there can be no higher tribute to theseÌýAmerican patriots than forging a united commitment to honor ourÌýtroops and veterans, give them the support and care theyÌýdeserve, and carry on their work of keeping our country strongÌýand free.”
Obama encouraged all Americans “to observe this solemn day of remembrance and to honorÌýour military, past and present, with appropriate ceremoniesÌýand activities.”
And this: “I urge all federal agencies and interestedÌýorganizations, groups, and individuals to fly the flag of theÌýUnited States at half-staff this December 7 in honor of thoseÌýAmerican patriots who died as a result of their service atÌýPearl Harbor.”
The president will notÌýbe participating in remembrance ceremonies Wednesday on Oahu.
But he is expected to join the prime minister of Japan on Dec. 27 when the two leaders will visit Pearl Harbor together.
