Angela Kaaihue Removed From City Council Meeting After Disruptions
She said renaming an aquatic center after the late Mark Takai was a “disgrace,” and suggested naming it for Donald Trump instead.
A police officer escorted former聽congressional candidate Angela Kaaihue out of a Honolulu City Council meeting Thursday after she loudly protested the renaming of an aquatic center in honor of the聽late Congressman聽Mark Takai.
Talking聽with Councilwoman Kymberly Pine聽before the meeting began, Kaaihue stated her opposition to , which renames the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Central Oahu after聽Takai.
Kaaihue said聽the name change would be a “disgrace” because of Takai’s Japanese ancestry, and then recommended it be renamed instead to honor President-elect Donald Trump.
After the meeting started, Kaaihue began singing loudly and dancing during a presentation by representatives of the Master Sha Tao Healing Center. That’s when a police officer escorted her out of the council chamber.
She was gone by the time council members heard testimony on the resolution to聽rename the aquatic center for Takai. The proposal was聽unanimously approved.
Even though neither political party wanted her, Kaaihue ran as both a Republican and as a Democrat for congressional seats in November. She was overwhelming defeated in her bid for a two-year term representing the 2nd Congressional District and in her bid to fill out the remainder of Takai’s term in the 1st Congressional District.
During the campaign season, Kaaihue offended many people with harsh statements about Japanese-Americans, Hindus, Buddhists and other groups.
