Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi is on trial for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars in county funds to pay for alcohol and other personal expenses.
A grand jury indicted the mayor on multiple charges in March, including two counts of felony theft, two additional counts of misdemeanor theft, three counts of tampering with a government record and one count of false swearing, which means making false statements under oath.
Kenoi has apologized for misusing his county-issued credit card but said he paid back all the money he borrowed for personal expenses including a $1,200 surfboard.
