The plans to open its waitlist for Section 8 rental housing vouchers for the first time in 10 years.
Applications will be accepted online in 11 languages between Tuesday August 16 and Thursday August 18.
People who are homeless, victims of domestic violence or were involuntarily displaced from their homes are eligible to apply.
Despite the short window to apply, the agency is expecting to receive 12,000 applications for the Housing Choice Voucher Program, better known as Section 8.
The Housing Authority hopes to issue at least 50 new vouchers within a month after accepting applications.
The federally-funded Section 8 program is administered in Hawaii by both the state Housing Authority and county governments. Wednesday’s announcement about the waitlist applies only to the state-run Section 8 program.
On Aug. 16, you will be able to apply at www.hpha.apply4housing.com. The application portal link is currently broken but will be live on Aug. 16, according to the governor’s office.
