Election For Vacant House Seat
Hawaii officials have confirmed that the special election to fill the late聽Mark Takai’s office will be held the same day as the Nov. 8 general election.
The state said聽Tuesday聽that it will conduct a special election Nov. 8聽to fill a vacancy in the 1st聽Congressional District.
The election will be held in conjunction with the regularly scheduled general election the very same date.
Candidate filing for the special election runs from Aug. 15 through Aug. 25 at 4:30 p.m.

As Civil Beat reported last month, following the death of U.S. Rep. Mark Takai, the Aug. 13 primary election聽will continue as scheduled.
Takai announced in May he would not seek re-election, citing medial reasons. That opened up the primary race to replace him.
The primary party winners will then compete against each other for the privilege of serving a full two-year term in the new Congress that opens in early January.
Meanwhile, the聽winner of the winner-take-all special election will fill the remainder of Takai’s term, from Nov. 8 to Jan. 3.
In theory, it is possible that the same candidate could win the general and special elections.
