Schatz Visiting Asian Leaders
The U.S. senator from Hawaii is leading a congressional delegation to Japan, South Korea and the Philippines.
Brian Schatz must not be too worried about winning re-election.
After all, his office said Saturday that he is leading a congressional visit to Asia this weekend — just four weeks ahead of the Aug. 13 primary.
Schatz plans to participate “in high-level meetings with leaders in Japan, Korea, and the Philippines,” says .
Members of the delegation include U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and U.S. Reps. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.), John Garamendi (D-Calif.) and Donna Edwards (D-Md.).
Before heading to Asia, says Schatz’s office, the delegation toured U.S. Pacific Command headquarters at Camp Smith in Honolulu, met with Admiral Harry Harris, PACOM’s commander;Â observed the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise; and met with sailors serving aboard the USS America.
Congress began a seven-week recess Thursday, , “leaving behind a trail of partisan fights, a failed bill to help fight the Zika virus, a stalemate on gun safety and a few mundane accomplishments that members hoped to sell as awesome to voters in an unsparing mood.”
Also left in the dust: “scores of judicial confirmations, a sweeping bipartisan criminal justice reform package and basic appropriations bills were left scattered about like errant wrappers from the Senate candy drawer.”
