The Senate killed听four separate gun measures Monday in the wake of the Orlando, Fla., mass shooting听鈥 “showing the partisan paralysis over gun control has barely moved on Capitol Hill despite the stream of continued gun violence across the country,” .
The measures听looked to听improve background checks for those who want听guns, and to make sure听those with terrorist ties do not get听them.
Two bills came from majority Republicans, who generally oppose gun control, while two others came from minority Democrats, who generally听favor gun control.
And all failed to get the听60 votes necessary听to advance.
Democrats Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz voted as most senators did, along party lines.
鈥淢ore than 90 percent of Americans demand we take action on gun violence, but again Senate Republicans refuse to act. It鈥檚 unacceptable,鈥 Schatz said in a press release after the votes.听鈥淩ight now, known terrorists are banned from getting on an airplane, but they are still allowed to buy military-style weapons. It is absolutely insane.”
And here’s what Hirono had to say:
鈥淓nough is enough. These victims and their loved ones deserve more than empty promises, thoughts, and prayers. Today, Senate Republicans sent a clear message that they are more interested in pandering to special interests such as the National Rifle Association than taking steps to prevent tragedies like Orlando, like Newtown, like Charleston, from happening again.鈥
Hirono and Schatz were part of a Democratic filibuster last week that sought the votes on gun controls.
Watch after the vote.
Senators who voted for/against allowing AG to stop transfer of firearm to suspected terrorist Amendment failed 47-53
