Hawaii County听police are investigating an officer-involved shooting Monday at a home off West Kawailani Street in Hilo, our听media partner .
Here’s what we know:
The shooting happened at about 4:20 p.m. Upon arrival, an officer encountered a man wielding a knife, and a pit bull that chased paramedics into their vehicle earlier on Monday. Several shots were fired by the officer, resulting in the death of the man and the pit bull.听Neighbors reported hearing six gunshots, and then a pause before six more gunshots were fired. The man who died was identified as 25-year-old Kalyp Rapoza of Hilo.听The officer who discharged his firearm is a 3-year veteran of the Hawai’i Police Department and was not injured.听The officer was placed on administrative leave according to department policy.
