Slom To Seek Another Senate Term
The Hawaii Senate’s sole Republican has held the seat since 1996.
Sam Slom, the Hawaii Senate’s sole Republican, announced Tuesday that he is seeking another four-year term this fall.
He filed his nomination papers聽with the Elections Office聽to make it official Tuesday.聽He聽also filed a voluntary spending limit affidavit with the state Campaign Spending Commission, as he has in every election, according to the announcement.
Slom, first elected in 1996, represents District 9, which spans聽Hawaii Kai to Diamond Head.
“My work for the people of Hawaii is far from done,” he said. “I have not wavered in my will to continue serving the public, and as always, I welcome any challenge.”
Slom said in a release that he has made “better-than-expected progress” in his recovery from recent coronary bypass surgery, and is eager to start campaigning.
He had missed the last few weeks of the legislative session, but returned聽before sine die May 5 to cast final votes on bills.
Slom has no Republican challenger yet. Former Honolulu City Councilman Stanley Chang, a Democrat, has filed to run against Slom. Democrat Richard Kim has pulled nomination papers, but has yet to file.
The candidate filing deadline is June 7.
