No Martin Mayoral Decision Yet
The Honolulu City Council chair says聽he will decide before the June 7 filing deadline.
With less than聽two weeks to go before the filing deadline, the race for Honolulu mayor has officially attracted eight candidates.
Incumbent Kirk Caldwell is one of them, of course, along with seven other people that most folks聽probably know little about.
Former Mayor Peter Carlisle is running, too, though he has yet to file.
What about Honolulu City Council Chair Ernie Martin?
“Despite speculation, likely from potential opponents, I have not made a decision about whether to enter the Mayor’s race,” Martin said through a spokesman Wednesday. “The filing deadline is June 7 and my family and I will make our decision before that time.”
Martin’s name has been bandied about for some time now. Other names include former Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona and former U.S. Rep. Charles Djou.
The Aug. 13 primary聽for mayor聽is nonpartisan. If no candidate wins 50 percent of the vote plus one, the top two finishers head to a general election runoff.
