Dr. Randall F. Holcombe, chief medical officer for cancer in the Mount Sinai Health System聽in New York City, has been chosen as聽the next director of the University of Hawaii Cancer Center.

His selection is聽subject to final approval by the UH Board of Regents at its Thursday meeting.

Holcombe has spent more than 25 years in academic medicine. According to , he聽is also “a researcher, with more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, a clinician and an effective administrative leader.”

Prior to joining Mount Sinai, Holcombe served as the division chief of hematology/oncology for 13 years at the University of California Irvine. He聽graduated from Duke University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey鈥怤J Medical School.

Jerris Hedges, dean of the University of Hawaii鈥檚 John A. Burns School of Medicine, has been serving as the cancer center鈥檚 interim director since the resignation in November 2014 of聽Michele Carbone.

At the time of Carbone’s resignation, the center faced an annual budget deficit of about $10 million.
