U.S. Rep.聽Tulsi Gabbard, the Democrat of Hawaii, is pleased that聽Speaker Paul Ryan has invited聽Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi of Congress聽in early June.

鈥淎s the world鈥檚 oldest and largest democracies, the U.S. and India have many shared values and objectives,” Gabbard said in a statement. “Since Prime Minister Modi was first elected in 2014, he has made active engagement with the United States a priority on many levels including exploring mutually beneficial economic opportunities, stronger government-to-government relations, and enhanced security engagements.”

Gabbard added, “I look forward to welcoming Prime Minister Modi to Washington in June, where his address to a Joint Session of Congress will explore how our two nations can work together to further our shared values and interests.”

According to聽Gabbard’s office, she聽聽wrote to Ryan encouraging him to invite Modi.

The congresswoman, a聽Hindu, has previously visited India, a largely Hindu nation, and met with Modi.
