If there are any worries that the state Senate’s only Republican is out of action, worry no more.

Sam Slom was his usual self Tuesday, voting “no” on countless bills sponsored by his Democratic聽Party colleagues.

Slom was hospitalized Friday after appearing ill at ease at the Capitol. But he promised a swift recovery, and then delivered.

The senator聽voted “no” so many times Tuesday that he probably should not have even bothered to sit down at his desk.

In one streak during the third hour of Tuesday’s floor session, he objected to for health care workers, money for at the University聽of Hawaii Manoa,聽disclosure of to government officials under聽specified situations,聽a tiered scale for for professional employer organizations, funds聽to help聽聽from the defunct聽Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company on Maui and a Department of Transportation study for an聽.

As the Senate concluded its business, Slom rose once again, this time on point of personal privilege.

He thanked his colleagues who, in spite of political differences, still聽offered their support to him during his illness. He said it showed聽why Hawaii is such “a special聽place.”

He also joked that, in the聽event of his death, he hoped Sen. Russell Ruderman would deliver the eulogy so that everyone could get some “sound sleep.”
