Harry Evans of Springfield, Oregon,聽apparently drowned Tuesday while snorkeling off the south shore of Kauai, county officials said.

Friends found the 75-year-old man unresponsive at Hanakaape Bay in Poipu and pulled him to shore.

Koloa firefighters attempted to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead after being transported to Wilcox Hospital.

It was the first drowning of the year聽on Kauai.

Civil Beat published a multi-part series in January on tourist聽safety. It found snorkeling to be the activity most commonly associated with visitor drownings.

State Department of Health data shows that since 2005, more than 128 visitors have drowned snorkeling in Hawaii鈥檚 waters.

On Kauai, visitors comprise roughly three-fourths of all fatal injuries.

In 2015, there were six drownings on Kauai. Five were visitors. Four happened in March and there were two in October, according to county spokeswoman Sarah Blane.
