The crisis of homelessness remains with us.

Hawaii Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui on Tuesday听extended a听emergency declaration proclamation to address homelessness statewide听鈥斕齮he third extension to the proclamation on homelessness that Gov. David Ige first declared four months ago.

鈥淚 believe it鈥檚 important that we continue to provide the support and services to our state, city and county partners to address this pressing issue,鈥 Tsutsui said in a press release.鈥淭here鈥檚 still much work to do to address this crisis and we must keep the momentum going to help the homeless community.鈥

The latest action continues emergency relief to Maui County efforts to establish a long-term housing project in Wailuku, and to set up听temporary and long-term housing in the City & County of Honolulu, Hawaii and Kauai counties.

The work also provide all counties “relief” in repair and maintenance of existing county shelters.

Hawaii, the governor’s administration reminds us, has “the highest rate of homelessness per capita in the nation, with an estimated 465 homeless individuals per 100,000.”

This third extension expires in April.

Tsutsui is acting governor until Wednesday as听Gov. David听Ige travels to New York and Washington, D.C., for meetings.
