Appeals Court To Hear Maui GMO Case
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Monsanto’s motion to dismiss an appeal by the SHAKA Movement.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has agreed to hear arguments on a Maui County moratorium on farming genetically modified crops, which was struck down by a federal judge in Hawaii last year.
The that the appeals court rejected Monsanto’s motion to dismiss the appeal.
More than 23,000 Maui residents voted to approve the moratorium in 2014. It would have temporarily banned growing genetically engineered crops until the county conducted a public health and environmental study of their impacts.
But Monsanto, Dow Agrigenetics and other agricultural groups sued to block the ban from going into effect. Judge Susan Mollway ruled against the moratorium last summer.
