16 Gun Deaths: What’d Hawaii Reps Do?
Hawaii’s congressional delegation is in sync when it comes to gun control, which may be part of why the Aloha State has so few gun-related deaths.
Guns have killed 16 people in Hawaii this year, mostly in the 2nd Congressional District representing rural Oahu and the outer islands. There were four gun deaths in the 1st Congressional District, which includes Honolulu and Kapolei.

Hawaii’s congressional delegation is in sync when it comes to gun control. None of the current members — U.S. Reps. Mark Takai and Tulsi Gabbard, and Sens. Brian Schatz and Mazie Hirono — have accepted money from the gun lobby or voted to expand the rights of gun owners since 2013. They’ve also consistently voted in favor of stronger regulations, according to The Guardian.
This may come as no surprise to people who live in the islands or others who may be familiar with Hawaii having the lowest rate of gun homicide in the country, at 0.62 victims per 100,000 people, according to an . The national average is nearly seven times as high.
The Ìý³Ù³ó²¹³ÙÌýMissouri’s first district has seen more gun deaths this year than any other congressional district, and that Sen. Ted Cruz has received the most money from the National Rifle Association and its supporters thus far this election cycle.
