Civil Beat Emerging Writers Contest
Hey, millennials! Make your voice heard at Civil Beat. And get paid for it.
We are looking for young writers who have something to say about issues that matter – or should matter – to people in Hawaii.
This contest is open to writers 35 or under. We are open to any form of expression that is publishable on our site: writing, podcasts, video, graphic/written work, whatever else you come up with that hasn’t occurred to us.
We’re looking for original columns and commentary, in whatever form, that focuses on public-affairs issues relating to politics, economics, justice, labor, social concerns or any other matters that affect you, people you know, or other people in their daily lives.
The top three entries will win cash prizes: $500 for first place, $300 for second place and $200 for third place. The winning entries will be published in Civil Beat – and could lead to a paid, regular spot as a columnist.
What we’re looking for:
- New voices with a distinctive viewpoint. Don’t be shy about telling it like it is and expressing yourself on your own terms.
- Clear, insightful, vigorous thought.
- A solid understanding of whatever you’re writing about.
What we’re not looking for:
- Writing about sports, music, entertainment or fashion.
- Anything that reads or sounds like it could have been written 20 years ago.
- Personal attacks or cheap shots.
- Material that has already been published elsewhere, including on personal blogs.
Deadline: Entries must be submitted by 6 p.m. Dec. 7, 2015.
