Red Hill Fuel Leak May Be Over 39,000 Gallons, KITV Reports
The Navy denies a new estimate provided to KITV by a whistleblower.
The Red Hill fuel leak 鈥斅爀stimated at 27,000 gallons 鈥斅爉ay be closer to 40,000 gallons according to a new report by KITV.
The underground storage tanks at Red Hill, which can hold 250 million gallons of fuel, spilled 27,000 gallons in January 2014, raising concerns about potential contamination of Oahu鈥檚 water supply.
KITV reported Wednesday that documentation provided by a whistleblower estimated the leak to be far worse: 39,312 gallons of JP-8 jet fuel.
But the Navy is denying that account and sticking with the previously reported number of 27,342 gallons.
