A new study says聽that states with “weak” gun violence prevention laws and higher rates of gun ownership have the “highest overall gun death rates in the nation.”
That’s according to a of data from the 鈥檚 National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.
Meanwhile, states with the lowest overall gun death rates have lower rates of gun ownership “and some of the strongest gun violence prevention laws in the nation.”
Hawaii earns聽top honors as聽the state with the lowest gun death rate, while Alaska has the highest gun death rate.
鈥淭his report should be a wake-up call to state legislators,鈥 CathieWhittenburg, communications director of States United to Prevent Gun Violence, said in a聽press release announcing聽the study. 鈥淭here is no higher priority for elected officials than enacting laws that keep families safe from death and injury.鈥
The nationwide gun death rate, by the way, was 10.64 per 100,000, and the total number of Americans killed by gunfire rose to 33,636 in 2013 from 33,563 in 2012.
Of note: The聽top five states with the lowest gun death rates are “blue” or Democrat-voting states, while the top five states at the other end of the spectrum are “red” or Republican-voting states.
