that Honolulu Mayor Kirk聽Caldwell leaves Monday night for Washington, D.C.

Caldwell’s agenda includes聽attending the United States Conference of Mayors’ annual winter meeting, speaking聽with federal officials regarding rail and meeting聽with the U.S. Veterans Administration about homelessness.

Rail and homelessness have been top priorities for the Caldwell administration, issues that have sometimes put him at odds with members of the Honolulu City Council.

Caldwell will also attend President ‘s State of the Union address Tuesday as a guest of U.S. Sen. .

The mayor will miss the opening day of the Hawaii Legislature on Wednesday, a body that may consider whether to extend the general excise tax increase on Oahu in order to help pay for huge increased rail construction costs.

Managing Director-designate will be acting mayor during Caldwell’s absence.
