Civil Beat reporter Nick Grube has been investigating the plight of Oahu’s homeless. Earlier this year, he聽spent the night with homeless people in Waikiki to share their stories of nightly police sweeps and life on the streets. Last week, he looked at Death on the Streets聽in a three-part series that analyzed homeless deaths. Since 2006, 417 homeless people have died on Oahu from a variety of causes.

Grube sat down with Pod Squad host Chad Blair and talked about what led him to investigate the issue and why it was important to put a face on these people. Using a letter he obtained from family members, he told the story of Tabatha Wood, who died of acute alcohol poisoning on a beach in Waikiki.

“It happens more frequently than you’d expect,” says Grube.
