PUNA, Hawaii 鈥擳he Kilauea lava flow has advanced approximately 250 yards since Saturday morning, entering the P膩hoa cemetery grounds.

Lava crossed Apa鈥檃 Street around 3:50 a.m. Saturday in Puna, and the area is being evacuated, officials said.

USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports the lava is about half a mile from P膩hoa Village Road and 0.9 miles from Hwy 130. The flow is moving at approximately 10 yards per hour in a northeast direction, according to officials at Hawaii County Civil Defense.聽

Smoke conditions may increase in some areas and officials said moderate trade winds from the northeast are pushing the smoke in a south southwest direction.

Based on the current flow, officials began placing residents on evacuation notice Saturday. The notice is ongoing and means residents in the flow path areas should prepare for possible evacuation in the next three to five days.

The flow front has spread out since yesterday afternoon and USGS officials estimates it to be about 150 yd wide 9 a.m. Sunday.

Apa鈥檃 Street and Cemetery Road are closed and access is limited to area residents.
