Breaking the Waves The sea wall sheltered Waikiki early in the morning on Aug. 8 as Oahu sat waiting for hurricane Iselle. The storm dumped as much as 15 inches of rain on parts of the Big Island, which took the brunt of the storm.
Waiting for Iselle There was a sense of foreboding as people on Oahu watched the horizon. Before reaching the Big Island, the hurricane was downgraded to a potent tropical storm, but it still generated large waves, downed trees, closed highways and interrupted power for at least 19,000 people on the state's easternmost isle.
Come Back Tomorrow A sign on the front door at Lawson Station in Waikiki expressed little doubt that the shop would only be closed for one day, but there were fears that the storm damage might cause problems for Saturday's statewide primary elections.
Hold Onto Those Old Shoes Another Day Sanuk didn't just close for the safety of customers and staff, it put boards on its facade. Some shop employees and homeowners taped their windows even though it is generally discouraged by experts.
No Waiting Lines! There was no long line of people waiting for a table at Eggs'n Things, on what would normally have been a bustling Friday morning.
Dry Saimin on a Wet Morning More than 2,200 people around the islands woke up in special shelters Friday that were set up in response to the storm. Waiting Out the Storm Tourists and homeless people stayed dry as the rain came down around them. But there wasn't as much water or wind as many people expected, or as officials feared. While damage in Maui County was limited, the roofs of a number of houses were reportedly torn off.
Tropical Storm Tourism A visitor captured a moment of calm amid the periodic gusts of wind and rain. “This is not Kansas, this is not Florida,” Gov. Neil Abercrombie warned at one point during the day. “The brunt of the storm has yet to come, so I do not want anyone to misconstrue the conditions that are pretty severe.
No Shopping Amid concern that the storm would worsen a security guard made sure that no one came to Ala Moana Shopping Center, which was closed. But in the end, Honolulu endured very little damage and only a moderate tropical storm. (Cory Lum, special for Civil Beat)
Detour Police and firefighters clear downed trees on the Pali Highway after winds approaching 50 miles per hour whipped through the area. By the end of the day, officials withdrew flood warnings for Oahu and other islands. But hurricane Julio is next. It is expected to pass through waters north of Hawaii early Sunday morning.
