U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz

U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz has raised nearly $5 million and spent more than $3 million in his effort to keep his job in Washington D.C., according to the latest filings released by his campaign.

Schatz, who is in a heated primary battle with U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, added another $820,000 to his bank roll in the last quarter, which runs between April 1 and June 30.

That brings his total contributions to nearly $4.8 million, which should be enough to keep him ahead Hanabusa, who has struggled to keep up financially.

Schatz has spent about $3.4 million during the campaign, with nearly half of those expenditures — about $1.8 million — coming in the last quarter.

He reported having $1.4 million in cash on hand.
