With roughly two weeks until the Hawaii primary, candidates keep upping their ad buys, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to get their message to voters. Candidates spent about a half-million dollars on TV ads running July 21 to 27.

  • U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz continues to heavily outspend his Democratic primary opponent, U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa.聽Schatz聽spent approximately $181,315 on ads running from July 21 to 27 while聽Hanabusa spent approximately $28,395 on ads for the same peroid. Schatz’s more pricey buys include a $3,000 spot during KGMB’s “Hawaii 5-0” and聽a $2,000 spot during KHON’s 6 p.m. newscast. Hanabusa’s costliest buys were an $800 spot聽during KGMB’s 10 p.m. newscast and聽$650 for a spot on “America’s Got Talent” on KHNL.

  • Candidates for Congress in District 1 continue to buy up airtime with Donna Mercado Kim spending over $50,000 on ads running from July 21 to 27. For the same period, State Rep. Mark Takai spent approximately $19,355, City Councilman Ikaika Anderson spent approximately $14, 135 and Honolulu City Councilman Stanley Chang spent approximately $4,215.
  • Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui spent approximately $86,000 on ads running from July 21 to 27, while his Democratic primary opponent,聽state Sen. Clayton Hee, spent approximately聽$29,025 聽for ads running in the same period. Republican candidate聽Warner Kimo Sutton bought approximately $375 worth聽of ads running in the same period.
  • In the race for governor, state Sen. David Ige bought his first ads starting last week.聽 From ads running July 21 to 27, Ige spent approximately $25,970.聽Meanwhile, Gov. Neil Abercrombie, who has been buying ads since May,聽spent more than $70,000 on ads running during the same period and聽Republican Duke Aiona spent just $350.
