ATF Releases New 2013 Gun Trace Statistics For US, Hawaii
The federal agency tracks guns that law enforcement agencies recover and trace during criminal investigations.
Hawaii law enforcement authorities recovered and traced 203 guns during 2013, according to from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Among the top crimes associated with those traces are possession of a weapon, gambling and drugs. Only two of the traces were related to homicides.
More than 235,000 weapons were recovered and traced by law enforcement agencies nationally in 2013.

Last week, Civil Beat shared an interactive graphic ProPublica put together using 2012 data.
Most of the guns traced to locations outside of Hawaii in come from California, followed by Oregon and Arizona.
That’s similar to 2012 when most guns traced out-of-state came from California and Washington.
Most guns recovered in Hawaii were found in Honolulu, followed by Lihue on Kauai.

The ATF also measured the “time-to-crime” rates between when a gun was purchased and when it was investigated as part of a crime.
In Hawaii that rate was 12.08 years. Nationally it’s 11.08 years.
