It was a busy week for Civil Beat, particularly as we approach our fourth anniversary.
It was around this time four years ago that founding editor John Temple along with Publisher Pierre Omidyar and company president Randy Ching welcomed the original crew of staffers (including Chad Blair) into the new newsroom. Two years later, John left for the Washington Post so it was good to have him back in our newsroom this week, where he chatted with Chad on how far Civil Beat has come, and where the journalism industry is headed.
If you missed the #cbchat you can catch it all here.
We also welcomed another well-known Hawaii face into our ohana of contributors this week 鈥 political pundit and University of Hawaii professor emeritus Neal Milner. Milner has been a regular for years on TV news and is often quoted in stories about politics as the go-to commentator on campaigns and politics.
In his debut column, Milner had much to say about the local media and it’s coverage 鈥 or lack of substantive coverage 鈥 of campaigns. His debut column can be found here.

How did Hawaii celebrate this hump day holiday? For many, it was a beach day.

Fashion retailer H&M’s opening day in Waikiki was another perfect opportunity for Honolulu residents to line up for something. The Waikiki store has hired 160 local employees, including 20 that have returned home to Hawaii from the mainland, according to a statement from H&M.
People started lining up at midnight, and branded umbrellas were given out to protect customers from the sun.
For whatever reason, there were thousands of people who didn’t work Thursday morning.

That prompted an open letter from a Civil Beat reader to the Hula CEO in our pages.
