For the latest version of “The Cut,” Civil Beat’s chief photographer, PF Bentley hit the road. The Cut begins beneath the Koolau mountains on the way to the State Hospital in Kaneohe. There he photographed that trouble-plagued institution for our Broken Promises story.

After preparing pictures of senatorial candidates Brian Schatz and Colleen Hanabusa from their editorial board meetings in Civil Beat’s offices for our “No Love” story, PF took his camera bag to the Legislature for a Senate investigative committee hearing on dysfunction at the Hawaii State Hospital.

The hearing was led by Clayton Hee, but the powerful senator wasn’t the only one there who made this week’s cut. PF snapped others at the hearing, including Department of Health Director Linda Rosen, Deputy Director of the Behavioral Health Division Lynn Fallin and the adult mental health administrator for the Hawaii Department of Health, Mark Fridovich. Sen. Josh Green and Sen. Rosalyn Baker were also present.

Then, PF took the surprisingly bumpy road down Waialae Avenue back to the office.
