For the latest version of “The Cut,” Civil Beat’s chief photographer, PF Bentley, captured plenty of evocative moments. He visited hearings on the minimum wage and homelessness, took in lei-laden glad-handing by Gov. Neil Abercrombie and Sen. David Ige on the gubernatorial campaign trail and Civil Beat’s editorial board meetings with Sen. Brian Schatz and Rep. Colleen Hanabusa. PF also went to Hanauma Bay before dawn to record the sunrise to go with our reporting on conditions in the area.

Here are some of the people who made The Cut:

State Sen. Clayton Hee, Chairman of the Judiciary and Labor Committee, oversaw a hearing related to homeless issues that is one of several that raise troubling questions. Activists Michael Tada and Michael Daly were among the passionate testifiers. Larry Geller, the president of the Kokua Council, even held up his cell phone screen to show Honolulu bathroom locations to highlight the challenges for homeless people when they need to relieve themselves. Laulani Teale, a coordinator of the Hoopae Pono Peace Project, also spoke.

At the Committee on Labor and Public Employment, State Rep. Mark Nakashima, the committee chair, watched as people spoke during a minimum wage hearing. Bart Dame of the Progressive Democrats of Hawaii and Jenny Lee, a staff lawyer with the Hawaii Appleseed Center for Law and Economic Justice, also had their say.
