Pritchett: From Riches to Rags

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell thought the sale of affordable housing facilities to a private developer would bring in much-needed cash and allow him to carry out some of his initiatives. But the $142 million deal is on the verge of collapse this week after the City Council reversed course and suggested it may no longer support the transaction. Caldwell is particularly unhappy that money for a program to help get homeless people off the streets may be in jeopardy. Relations between the mayor and some council members have grown increasingly strained, and the thought of Caldwell begging them for money sparked political cartoonist John Pritchett’s artwork this week.
