Sparks were flying at this week’s meeting of the Honolulu Ethics Commission. Executive director Chuck Totto accused Corporation Counsel Donna Leong of trying to undermine the commission’s ability to effectively investigate and resolve ethics violations by cutting the staff budget. That dust-up came soon after the commission ruled that while the mayor had not run afoul of ethics rules for his participation in a swanky campaign fundraiser, his political allies had strayed over the line. That prompted political cartoonist John Pritchett to muse whether Caldwell might have felt a bit stung by the implications after all.
